Lagging on old games with 5850 overclocked

Hi guys, i recently built a gaming (not hardcore, just some light gaming) computer
here are the specs:

Intel i5 2500k
MSI socket 1155 motherboard
ocz stealth 700w power supply
xfx radeon 5850 black edition (factory overclocked)
4GB (2x2GB) dual channel ddr3 ram (i think it was like 1600)
1TB 7200 Rpm 64Mb Cache western digital hard drive
the rest isnt important (optical drive etc)

ok, so now to my question
i was playing some games that are fairly old such as counter strike source and call of duty 4 modern warfare (the original), both directx 9 games and yet im still lagging pretty hard on them
and yes i was playing offline so latency isnt the problem

i read on reviews that the 5850 black edition is amazing etc and it can handle games like crysis etc with no problem so im wondering why im lagging with these old games

oh yea, im running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and i already upgraded the drivers for my graphics card (i first upgraded it using the driver provided in the disc that came with the card but then uninstalled the driver, downloaded a newer driver for the 5800 series from amd's website and installed it)

please help!
one of the main reasons i made this computer is to play those somewhat old games that i couldnt play before on my intel chipset laptop but the performance im getting is way too low for an overclocked 5850

all your advices are appreciated

also, im getting 267 frames per second for counter strike source (which in my opinion has some pretty amazing graphics)

You're going to have to describe what you mean by lag, because by my standards 267fps is not laggy...

And also, since when is CSS and CoD4 considered "old" games? Quake, doom, maybe C&C I can see as "old" games. Granted, by saying that, it probably makes me look "old" :(.

yea! exactly, during the stress test, everything went so smoothly, i didnt see a single glimpse of lag whatsoever however, when i begin to play (both online and offline), the lag begins

You said that you had low fps in CSS, then you said that you had 267 fps in it? That isn't bad at all.

What driver version are you running? If you aren't sure, open up run (start > programs > accesories > system tools > run or just press the windows key on your keyboard + R together). Type in dxdiag, click yes, click the Display tab and it will say on the right what driver version you are on

i used catalyst 11.1, the one provided on the installation cd and right now, i downgraded to 10.10 (yes i did uninstall the old drivers and ran driver sweeper before installing the new ones)

Is Vsync on or off? What ever it is try the other? Also is your refresh rate matched to your monitor in the Catalyst?
