hi, me and my friends would like to play Lan when we visit each other using our laptops and we were wondering if it is possible to play on LAN using a cable or wifi without having to all be connected to the interent via router?

thanks for any help

can this work, i kinda had the same q about this but for desktop, can u connect a CAT5 internet cable from my Desktop to the other persons desktop and play on a lan ????

you need something called a crossover cable. i dont know what the diff is, but you would then set up a ping, and it should work fine. you would have to do a ping over ad-hoc as well.

Yes, all you need is a crossover cable and then manually set the IP and other settings.

Umm... ping? You dont "set up" ping. Ping is a tool which basically lets you send a packet to a certain address, and it tells you if it went through and the time it took.

thanks alot guys. with a crossover cable would we be able to connect more than 2 laptops or would we be limited to just the 2?

It would be just the two laptops unless one of the laptop had two RJ45 ports (ethernet port).
Generally if you want to connect three or more laptop into LAN, the best and easiest way to do it is through router (wired) or wireless.

there are 8 wires in a network cable, you send data through the same wires on every RJ45 port, you crossover some of the wires (cant remember how many) so the data doesnt conflict and "meet in the middle". You need this for absolutely everything, for routers, hubs etc they cross the wires over internally so you use a straight through cable. (just to explain) You can only have 2 laptops/computers connected to each other as you wouldn't be able to connect another one due to not enough network leads. It is possible to have 2 connected using a wire then connect another one using an ad-hoc wireless network though it may take a while to get all the computers to see each other.

Hope this helps.

great post. i learned something new. i did some network terminations (my job) which included putting rj-45 ends on cat-5 cables, but i didnt really know what the diff was.
