Hey!

Well I bit the bullet and have decided to setup a lan gaming event in the UK! I have the location sorted it can hold up to 4000 indoors and god knows outside! Im doing it with 2 other friends but i'm the only one with the knowledge of routers etc(well im not a pro at them haha)

What i need to know is if id use routers or switchers and the difference?
I've never setup up a server before so how would I go about setting one up for each game and console type?
What software is needed?
How can I make it so that it automatically puts the best 3 players from a game into another game played by the other best 3 players if you get me?
Would it be best to do it manually rather that automatic..Say I could say right you were the top three ill drag you to this game and you play?

Im not worried about power or anything like that as its a huge complex with backup generators etc so not a worry about stuff like that its just the server part lol

If possible can you asume i know nothing about servers or routers so its 100% clear :D

Hope you can help

Many thanks
Joe

Unless you invent your own matchmaking system with a set of ranks you can't have it know what players are at what skill.

I'll go over your post after I post this, and see if I can help at all. I run my own LAN events, and even incorporated the group. If you want, we can even talk on IM or messaging via CF.

Edit.

Let's say you have 30 people attend, you can use a 24 port switch and a few 8 port routers, and connect the routers to the main switch, then go from that. Depends on what you have and are willing to get.

I've never setup up a server before so how would I go about setting one up for each game and console type?
Assuming they're all PC games, you can either do it on say your PC, assuming it's up to par, or use a dedicated server, we can talk about specs and stuff.

What software is needed?
Depending on the game, you can use the game itself and create a LAN game, or with some Steam games, you can use a program that hosts the game, like Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 have dedicated server programs, available through Steam.

How can I make it so that it automatically puts the best 3 players from a game into another game played by the other best 3 players if you get me?
Would it be best to do it manually rather that automatic..Say I could say right you were the top three ill drag you to this game and you play?
Sounds like it can only be done manually, unless you code/create something, though to make it easier, and a bit more fun, you can have a scoreboard with brackets and stuff.

Im not worried about power or anything like that as its a huge complex with backup generators etc so not a worry about stuff like that its just the server part lol

Also, do you know how to arrange tables in a functional way? And will internet be provided? That usually makes or breaks a LAN.

awesome thanks alot :D

My msn is: [email protected]

So why would you use a router and a switcher as apposed to just on or the other?

as for the server no i was thinking of doing PS3 xbox and PC so how would you go about doing the other 2?

so say I had a match going on I setup the lan game would i just specatate the game as i dont wanna be playing it haha! And also say i wanted the top 3 players from one game playing another game would that be done via the game or say moving ethernet leads to a different switcher?

You suggest manually is that like moving ethernet leads or is that software based?

As for tables yes i have an idea but everything helps :D and also internet the complex has internet but its 8mbp so aint great!!!

Many thansk for your help :D

Well, the switch is the main thing, you could host a whole event on a switch, if you had enough ports, but if you have a decent sized switch, and a few router nodes around the room, you cut down on the amount of cables going to the switch.

Well, PS3 and 360 should be easy, assuming the games support a LAN feature, or if you have internet, it shouldn't be much of a problem, and you could put the console gamers on their own network.

Yeah, you'd pretty much just spectate the game, or you could play yourself. I hosted a TF2 game on my laptop (specs in sig), for an event with about 20 people playing, there was no lag, until I alt+tabbed out, but it just froze the game for a few seconds, lol. And if you want the top 3 in a game, you could move them to their own server setup by you, or if you wanted a totally separate network for the winners, that could probably work too, depending on the whole situation.

I recommend putting the winners in their own game to play against each other, that way they can pretty much do it themselves, and you can worry about the event more.

Alright, yeah depending on the shape and size of the venue, I'd draw some layouts and get some rough or exact estimates of what you want.

Many thansk for your help :D

No problem.

Hey thanks so much again :D

So the consoles would plug into the routers and inturn the routers would plug into the switch?

I don't want console people playing PC as PC have an unfair advantage on the speedy mouses lol...So would that just be a matter of again spectating a game and setting it up? You said about people setting up there selves etc so we can worry about the event but there would be big prizes involve so couldnt risk cheaters etc!

Do you know of any softwares that can run lan like ALP but more upto date? or would that be something id need coding?

Many thanks again!

Joe
