If I am using WinXP Pro, and I am connected to a switch, and have others connected, how do I host games and stuff?

Like, I am getting pretty serious RSVP's. I've hosted an Xbox LAN it went perfect.

But this will be PC's.
I guess, how can I assure myself I can get games connected and have everyone playing and stuff.

Connect them all on the same side. None in the Wan side... (assuming you are using a switch and not a router, there should not be a wan side).
 
Once you have done what Trizoy said, find your IP simply by viewing the status of your LAN connection (the one thats connected to the switch), and then giving your friends the IP to connect to. But some newer games can automatically search the LAN for games, while others still need the IP entered in manually.

Could I just go to an IP site. And write it down. Or is it different?

The games were going to play are CSS, BF2, and BF2142. Stuff like that.


And is that a for sure set up? Like can anything go wrong?

Yeah, you don't want your external IP. Since you are all on the same network you will all have IPs in the same range (i.e. 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, and so on). As long as your IPs are in the same range then you shouldn't have much of an issue.

Like Omega said, some games will search for LAN servers, others require an IP address. If you can search for LAN servers you can just connect that way, otherwise entering the internal IP address will work. If you have an extra PC I'd run the server off that, just to reduce any lag. If you are hosting a server and playing it off the same machine you might experience some lag, but this also depends on your connection. Try to have a temporary dedicated server, instead of just creating a server and playing it on the same machine.

Edit: If you are hosting a server off the same machine you're playing the game on, you may not experience lag, as the information is not traveling very far at all, but the others may experience lag.
 
Are there dedicated programs for BF2 and BF2142?

And what type of router should I attached to the switch?

How do i tell if I have a DHCP router.
To hook to the switch to configure IPs if needed.

And would I use a regular CAT5 cable or a crossover cable.

Is it just me or do all of your threads revolve around how to set up switches and routers for lan's... im sure you should know all of this already the amount of lan's you claim to have planned

If you have a home router then you have DHCP, but it may not be enabled. If you're not sure then just take a look at the configuration.
 
Do I need a crossover or would a regular ethernet work?


And I am using a NetGear Wireless / Ethernet router.


And does it matter what port it goes into?

You definitely want a regular Cat5 cable... crossover is generally only for connecting two computers together with no switch/hub/router in the middle.

And the port doesn't matter as long as it's not the WAN port.

Also, in my experience, if you set up a network so that all of the computers can detect it, most games will do the rest of the work for you. Unless you're playing some REALLY old game, if you create a game on one computer, it should show up on the others with no problem, and no entering IP addresses.
 
I am currently running a Counterstrike server, using my school network as a base for transmission, play and connection.
