Lan Question

I have a six year old Gateway that runs XP. My new computer will have Vista. Will I be able to connect them by a LAN or do they need the same OS?

Also, can you connect two desktops with crossover cables from the network cards or is a router needed?

It should work just fine.

Yes you can network two PC's when one has XP and one has Vista.

If you just want to connect those two computers, then yes you can use a crossover. Although you will need to manually set the IP's and gateway.
