Now that I got a website for my LAN and its doing very well. I need to work on a server.

I have...
An ethernet 24 port switch
a p4 @ 3.7ghz or somethihng
1gb ram
80gb hdd

I need something that is friendly towards windows based computers that will be hooking up to it.
Need it to work well with CSS.

Let me know.

Thanks

Is this server only being used as a gaming server? If so, you could just use Windows XP Pro, since the game itself would be the actual program that would be used to host the server.

Well.
Not really a gaming server. It will be for LAN parties.
Unless gaming server fits that description. I thought a gaming server was a dedicated server that anyone can join, like in css.

well, you can do either one, but it depends on your setup. lan parties exclude the internet i believe hence lan, local area network, instead of an internet network

I am not going to include an internet connection until the right time.

But what does XP Pro have in it that I can have it host LANs.

CS:S can use Linux as a dedicated server, a distribution like Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu or Fedora Core would do nicely.:)

I tried clarkconnect and smoothwall something like my home router which was connected to the switch. The router of mine, wouldnt let the switch take its place or something.

But you said ubuntu can work?

Sweet, would it?
And its a free distribution, right?

LAN Parties are all gaming right? So what would be different about that then a gaming server?

And with a dedicated LAN Party/Gaming server, you can have it host a server for a particular game, and have everyone else join in via that, but you usually can only have one game server running on a PC, since some require the actual game to be running.

You can just use Windows XP Pro and run the game servers off that, since most games require Windows in order to run.... I dont know why you want to use a different OS.

Running dedicated game servers on a different OS save you money on buying the license for the windows version. Also, Linux boxes generally perform better on older hardware than windows boxes and are less susceptible to viruses and spyware. Plus, dedicated servers for games run in terminal mode, so you do not need a graphics card or antyhing else of the like. There are tons of reasons to not run windows, just like there are many reasons to run windows.

However, running a server for gaming online is a whole different story. You are better off renting a server from a service that actually has the bandwidth to support it.

I decided on running clarkconnect for the first lan, which will run CSS.
Then, either before or after the first LAN. I am going to partition the 80gb hdd.
And have linux on one and windows on the other. And run them at different times.

Or run windows' game servers on my computer, instead of the lan computer.

Thanks

What are you talking about? If you want to host a CSS server, all you need is a personal computer even running Windows XP Pro, launch Steam, launch the dedicated server program, and then everyone on your LAN can join. You dont need to buy any licenses to run a LAN gaming server with Windows.

no, you need to buy a license for windows xp pro, or xp home or whatever, where as any linux distro is free for download.

Plus you will want to download the HLDS application so you can configure your server and run any mods if you want to and set the rules for your mods. I used to run a bunch of gaming servers back in the day. I wasn't talking about counter strike servers, I was talking about the OS. Hence my comment about there are a million reasons to run windows and a million not to.

If you plan on hosting an internet gaming server so you and your friends or clan can play each other online you are better off renting that service. Pretty much all home internet connections lack the upload speed to handle a gaming server.

Oh ok, I jsut mis-read your post. But from the sound of it, he's using a PC just to host a small LAN party with some friends, nothing like a huge 48 person online dedicated server.

And even though Windows costs money, there are some games that can not be used on Linux.

So I would say if he already has a copy of Windows, then use that, but if not Linux would be a decent choice.
