LAN setting for access permissions

Sorry if the word is a little confusing. I'm on a Chinese system and I don't really know what the actual name is in English.

Anyways here's the problem: I am trying to set up a LAN for a small office for about 10 computers. I need to set up a system that everyone on this LAN is allowed to access all shared files but only certain users over the network are allowed to make changes to certain files (everyone else can only open as Read-Only) on a computer that is acting as a server, currently running XP Pro SP3.

I have tried but don't know how to achieve this.

Thank you for your time.

I think your going to need a server version of windows. Also there may be a way to do it with a NAS.

assumming you know how to set the computers in a work group

open up where you want to create the shares
select tools>folder options>select the view tab>scroll to the bottom>un-check simple file sharing> click ok>

on the xp/server create the folders you want to share

right click on a folder

select sharing & security

select share this folder

select permissions

click add

add whoever you wish

assign permissions as approptiate

done

DO NOT CLICK DENY FOR ANYONE!!!!!!

JUST UNCHECK THE ALLOW BOX
