Hello, My friend has just gotten he's dads old IMB Think Pad laptop, He dos'nt know the password and he cant get it because his father has past away a few months ago. I told him i would find out how to get into the lap top for him, its a IMB Think Pad it has Windows XP professional on it, I think its on a domain or something how could i get into it??

1st u gotta ask him, does he need the files on the laptop? if NO then reinstall windows, if he does i suggest u partition your hardrive and install slackware (unix distro) then go to the directory of your windows password files, then crack the hash, which could take a while depending how long and decent the pwd is...

ps. dont tell her friends you know how to do something without the knowledge of knowing how to. Just in case you get stuck in a middle of a lie. trust me ive been there. ONLY act smart. :p

Alright thanks for helping, It dosn't have a disk drive or flopy disk its a x60s lenovo it says and it has intel centrino duo/ Im willing to do anything could you please help me. He don;t need files. Im not in a hurry but need info because he might pay me.

lmFAO! silly you.. well listen, if your looking for a quick solution go grab a external CD-ROM and reinstall windows. If that is unavailable, then go buy an external CD-ROM. other than that. your going to have to settle with nothing. heres a tip: find a cheap external cd-rom drive locally, find how much it is, then charge your friend 2x more than you paid for the external, and there u go! also keep the external CD-ROM just in case another one of your friends needs that same solution. goodluck soldier!

then install ubuntu for him, you will be doing him a BIIGG favor by doing that.. plus you and him will be able to use it and learn all the exciting tools it comes with and learn some programming while your at it. go here http://www.ubuntu.com/ tell him once he gives u a windows cd, you'll THEN reinstall windows. or you can do what i *hinT*DO NOT RECOMMEND AND TOTALLY AGAINST THE LAW BY DOWNLOADING STUFF OFF OF TORRENTZ DOT COM AND GETTING INTO REALLY BIG BIG TROUBLE AND GETING FREE STUFF. <---- DO NOT DO *hint*

Whats ubuntu

well you should read about it, I gave you the link, its says it right there on their homepage "about ubuntu" in BIG LETTERS. read it.

Well there is ways of getting around the password, I dont know if its really his or what just by your word, so I cant talk about it.

Have you tried to login on the Administrators acc.?

If there was never a password set for the Administrator account (assuming this is Windows...) you can boot into safe mode and log in with no password and then reset all passwords from that account. This is a built in feature of Windows and it is not a hack and you must set the Administrator password when you first install Windows.

I think Vista may have taken that feature out, but I can't recall.

Also, I really don't think it is good advice to recommend someone use Linux as an answer to their problems. Especially if they have no idea what it is, then they probably don't know how to use it, and it probably won't fix their problems they came here to ask.

Remember to run from the birthday cake!

What exactly did you mean by "...Safe mode didn't work for me...", how exactly didn't it work? What method did you use to access safe mode?

Also, try to think of anyone you know who might have an external CD/DVD drive and a rescue disk (sometimes called a boot disk). Lots of people have these things. Do you know anyone who is very knowledgeable of computers? Maybe try talking to them for help with this.

If all else fails, and you and your friend have the time; tell your friend to stop by a computer repair shop and have them reset the password. I doubt they would charge you anything for this. My shop wouldnt charge just to change a password.

If it were me though....I'd give it back to him, an tell him you couldn't fix it.

Comeon, its his dad's old laptop. How would you feel if you had to tell him "you accidentally messed it up" while trying to "fix it". You might be minus a friend.

Maybe next time don't tell someone you can "fix it" unless your absolutely sure you can. Computer (and car) problems can be way more complex than imagined.
