Im gonna lapp my processor, and possibly my zalman, depending on how flat it realy is tormow.

Are there any precautions i should look out for.

Im going to tape down 400, 800 and 1000 grade wet and dry abrasive paper most likey, onto my kitchen work top which is flat.

Im gonna use the felt tip trick too.

Should i use any liquid?

If any one has anything they can add, id appreciate it, ive read many online tutorials too.

And of course il lpost pics and reuslts when im done

I lapped the processor today, popped it back in and BEEEEEP BEP BEP. SH*t !!

So then i plugged in my older 3800 x2 - BEEEEEP BEP BEP

Now im on a n old P4 lol. I am thinking that its weird how both processor dont work, or could it be another hardware problem? I thought the system wouldnt start up without a wokring cpu, but the whole thing starts up normally

PHEW, i looked up the BIOS beeps on google on old PC and it turns out my problem was video card, so i reseated the card, and now im back on current machine, but with the old 3800 x2 because i have no more thermal paste for the lapped opteron, so im led to belive that my lapped cpu wil work, once i get some AC5 for it. WOOp

Ill post some pics up in a min

Here is some pics,

Possibly tomrow, if not then monday or tuesday, ordered some in from a shop. But i might squeeze some cermaique out tonight if i can

Being flat helps, but the smoother it is the more metal to metal contact you have. We used to fool with them till we had them like mirrors:D

Yes.. they can be lapped... Any heatsink can... CPU HSF, GFX, ect... Not everything is at flat as it seems...

If you paid more attention to the words I used you would understand: I said heatsinks shouldn't "need" to be lapped, not that they can't be lapped. There is no purpose in lapping most aftermarket heatsinks such as Zalman because they are already lapped and polished and such in production; whereas CPUs are not. Most decent heatsinks come pre-lapped.

Polished doesnt mean flat now does it.

Thanks Mep
