Hey, first off I'm new to the forum, so forgive me if I posted this in the wrong spot. I have a modified dell XPS 14Z laptop from like 2007 (rough guess), I bought it used and this one had some better hardware from the factory then the standard model (I installed more ram after though).
GPU: GeForce GT 520M
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz
Memory 8.00 GB RAM (7.95 GB usable)
Current resolution: 1366 x 768, 40Hz
Driver version: Nvidia 331.65 (not the latest but works better then others)
Operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
I have two issues. Firstly the whole laptop will flicker once off and on without turning the laptop off, this includes the entire screen, light up keys and even the off button, as if the laptop looses power for a split second. It SEEMS this happens when moving the laptop.
Second, during games the game screen flickers like 15 times in a few seconds ONLY if it is minimized, the rest of the screen is normal. I play mostly java based games.
I have done clean installations on java, video driver, and the operating system. Everything is up to date. (My father did it all he is a computer geek, even more then me.)
The only bad thing that has happened to the laptop was a spark onto the motherboard. From the ground right on the positive lead on the board when I forgot to remove the battery first when changing the heat sink thermal paste. This was to decrease the temp (it used to run at 200 degrees Fahrenheit, then went down to 160 after). Note all flickering problems happened before this as well, so it seems I got very lucky.
This laptop has over 5000 hours on it. Now certain keys only work if I press hard on them. Others type like 3 times when I press them sometimes. That only happened after the motherboard short, but it could have been just the keyboard wearing out. It also now has issues loading java games 1 out of 3 times, an error pops up saying "java unable to start virtual machine". I have reinstalled java, but I'm running a 32 bit java and my pc is 64 bit. Do they make a 64 bit version?
Also forgive me if I said anything incorrect.
EDIT: I have considered getting a new laptop, ive had a ton of issues with NVidia not working with half my games half the time. I read im not the only one. I also regret ever getting a metal laptop, even with a laptop case it dents here and there. I end up having to pop out at least one dent a month and I'm not hard on laptops either. Its like razor thin metal, and the paint has completely worn off in many spots.
Thank you to anyone who takes the time to even read this and help me out.
