Laptop Battery Help

I currently have an old laptop battery that only lasts about 15 minutes on a full charge. How do I keep this from happening to new batteries? I'm not talking about power options and making the battery last longer per charge but am referring to delaying the need for replacing a battery.

Will taking my battery out while my laptop is plugged in help?
Should I only charge when it's turned off?

Yeh, I'd say it would be a good idea to keep the battery off of it unless you're using it.
 
I keep it in, but I know its knackering the battery. You should run from the battery when its fully charged, then plug the mains in when its running low, or as joshj said, take it out when you got mains connected.
 
You're old battery probably isn't lithium, right? If it's older than about 10 years or so, it's probably not.

THere's nothing you can do to keep batteries from loosing their charge. It happens over time. Today's batteries are typically lithium so you don't have to worry so much when you charge them(it's actually better to charge them before they get too dead) Something else, be sure you actually use the battery every so often, or keep it on the charger. If you leave a battery off a charger for 3 months or so, they can loose their ability to hold charge.

Stick 'em in the fridge

You should run it down periodically also (to complete 0) then recharge it fully (24 hours or however long it takes)

or keep it on the charger. If you leave a battery off a charger for 3 months or so, they can loose their ability to hold charge.

If you leave batteries in a charger for too long it ALSO damages the ability for them to charge.

If you read up on Litium batteries, those are basically untrue anymore... I have read a few places it's better to charge them pretty early rather than letting them go flat. Hey, I did this with my PDA and it never gave me any problems the ~2 years I had it ;)

And leaving it on the charger, lithium batteries are suppose to have a chip on them to keep them from being overcharged. I didn't really beleive this, but I opened one of my old batteries for my old digital camera, and it did have a chip on it :eek:

Batteries are more advanced than we realize :P
