Laptop battery not being detected

Bought a new battery as the old one was not being detected anymore but after only one use with this new battery it is saying battery not detected. Could this be a defective battery? or is there another issue with the connection. The charger light on the cord is lighted.
 
Is it a genuine battery from the manufacturer, or is it a $10 eBay battery?
 
Try turning the laptop off, remove the AC adapter and battery, hold the power button down for several seconds, turn the computer on with only the AC adapter, then once in windows attach the battery.
