Laptop Battery, URGENT!!!!!!!

I'm only 15 so I apologize for not being fluent in computer jargon just yet, but I'm having issues with my laptop!!!

I have a Toshiba Satellite (not sure of the model, but was brand new on the market in 2013) and it's just gone out of warranty. My dad and I have the same laptops and last year my charger broke so I was just borrowing his. However, I tried to charge it yesterday like I do all the time and it wouldn't charge, or would charge for 10 minutes and then shut down again. I plugged the same charger cord into dad's computer and it charged his like normal. What's wrong with mine?

He said the power-point in the laptop might have broken, but the little pin is still attached. Could it be that the battery is fried? There is no charge so there's no way to get on there and diagnose the problem. Has anyone had this problem before and know how to fix it? We really can't afford $100's to fix it right now, and I don't want to lose all my data/info....

Thanks!!!

Could be anywhere from a bad charging port to a bad motherboard. But my guess is the charging port. If you have the same laptop swap batteries and see if it starts up. If it does then it's the charging port.
