Laptop Battery

Hi,
I recently bought a netbook and I'd like to know if there are certain things one must do to maximize the potential of the battery. For example, does it help if the battery is empty when I charge it?

Are you asking if there is something that you can do to help extend the time between charges, or to extend the lifetime of the battery?

Simple answer to your last question is, it will extend the life cycle of the battery if you leave it to die completely before charging it at least once every 14 days.

If you are looking for longer battery life then what I did was went to Amazon.com and checked out a 3rd party company that made batteries for my netbook that was larger.

You have to be careful though cause some companies are just crappy cheap knock off's so read the reviews and remember you pay for what you get.

I'm pretty sure it's bad to completely drain lithium ion batteries. What I generally hear and do to preserve battery health is to charge it when it's around 20%, and charge it to full. Then use it without AC power until it drains to 20%.

Your correct. I have many lithium batterys for drills etc. says do not drain all the way down. and do not over charge or it will destroy the battery.
Read the manual, its there to maintain the battery life properly.

Anything i buy now i look for smart chargers. Gets low then charges and turns off. Max out charge and shuts off. even the batteries i have for blower and weed wacker or what ever. i paid a $100 for the 18v batteries and they do have tell ya the status of the battery.
Not my laptop tho. read the manual.

@wolfeking: Actually I'd like both, are the problems so different in solving?

From what I understand, if I were more interested in the lifetime of the battery, I should first check whether my battery is lithium or not. If it is then if I empty it before I charge it I'll actually damage it. Is that correct?

About changing the battery, I've heard that it costs more to get a new one than getting a new netbook, is that true?

Depend on the cost of your netbook. The batteries cost between $65-$125 depend on the brand and size 3cell 6 cell or 9 cell.
Cheers

depends on where you get the battery.
And there are different ways that you can go about extend the battery life (before it dies). Easiest way is to go dows to the power settings and choose power saver. Also, set the screen brightness to the lowest setting that you are confortable with.
Im sure someone else can give a little more help here.
