Laptop Build

you can build a barbone. shell and monitor/keyboard everything else you put in yourself except motherboard and power supply.

*Extremely* difficult/time consuming/expensive. Finding components with the correct port configuration to line up with the casing also needs to be carefully monitored, unless you buy them both together, in which case...why not just by a complete system.

Which is why I've thought of that and decided to probably never try it unless absolutely necessary.

If I'm ever looking for a good laptop at a steal price, I check e-bay for the newer ones that are broken, with an easy fix. (no Hard Drive, No ram, cracked LCD, faulty keyboard, etc.). After taking apart an older HP Omnibook 6000, I realized it isn't that hard to disassemble and reassemble a laptop.

Well, reassembling and direct-builds are a bit different. Reassembling is simply taking pieces known to be compatible with each other and placing them into the chasis in order. A direct-build would require lots of research, money, and time (not to mention a decent amount chasis fabrication, too, most likely) to pull off. It's nothing at all like building a desktop.

So, for a person who doesn't have an income, has no patients and has very little time, its probably not the best idea. Thanks

Pretty much, yes:( I have the patience, and know-how, and I *still* wouldn't take on a project like that.

I suppose I would still be able to say I built a laptop. I might think about my priorities for a while. I might get a graphics card instead,

You could get the asus c90, in the long run its bacisly like building one in the long run since you can upgrade everything.... including the screen :D

laptop mods

Ive got a laptop which would be a super laptop in the 80s, its loaded with windows 95 and still runs slow thats how old it is, but ive came up with a project and was wondering if it would be possible so please post back a reply or email me at [email protected]. I want to know if it is possible to swap the RAM memory for sd card readers and to use an sd card as a hard drive so that as the new larger SD cards come it its just a matter of loading it with the operating system or transfering the data over from the smaller card to the larger 1. I know i would have to alot of reprograming but in the end i think it would be worth it because instead of having to buy a much more expensive hard drive i could buy a simple cheap SD card. If i was to put more than one SD card space for the hard drives i could use as many as i wanted to give me more hd space, i know the cost will add up but it gives a more accurate space and the HDDs would always be availabe to take out quick and easy. Again please post a reply if you think it is possible to do so thanks

An interesting project in theory, but will not work in the real-world. The technology will kill you at two point: 1 - Windows 95 (and the older hardware also) was not designed to be highly-upgradable; and 2 - newer software (and hardware) are not able to be backwards-compatible with technology that old. It is what it is.

If all you want is an older laptop, I would suggest taking it apart and remove any dust or random crap that's inside, then format the HDD. Do a fresh install of Win95 (or even 3.1 would work) and only load what you absolutely need on it (meaning no music, no games, nada - just OS and AV to browse the internet.

laptop mod

what about if you simply swapped the RAM ports on the computer for small sd card holder and change the hardrive to read from a similar card holder, would it not be possible to change the operating system so that it would be able to read the card holders instead of the hdd and the RAM memory. Surely its possible to reconfigure windows or even to the xtreme create a whole new operating system which would alow the motherboard to read sd cards as ram or as the hdd depending on which way you would like to configure it. So basically we have a large mobile phone in the shape of a laptop which cant make calls???

Is it possible to build a laptop? It would be an interesting project.

In a nutshell,,,Yes,

You can go around town and find you a shop that recycles old computers.Find one with a bad mother board and make a offer on it.You can find just about anything on EBAY for a laptop if your willing to wait.

Ive working on rebuilding 4 laptops right now.As soon as I get everything I need together,,Ill have them up and running for probably under $150 my cost.

some of the best deals out there is to find a old laptop where the power cord in the back gets loose and the power jack wont stay in place anymore.

You can buy a power jack for under $5 bucks and solder it yourself. Its a very labor intensive process that most people could do for themselves if they had the ability,,but retail shops generally charge more for repairing them than they are worth.

Don't even bother, it is hard enough to fix a laptop let alone building one. Parts at radioshack for a new laptop will run you a price of a new lexus.

Reassembling/repairing/rebuilding is different from custom-building. When you repair/reassemble/rebuild, you're fixing, not creating.
