Laptop Can't Handle Complex Work - Help Please!!

Ok, I had some spyware problems a couple weeks ago. I installed Norton Internet Security 2007 and it got rid of a lot, but I could never complete a full scan. It would get about 70% done, and the system would shut down and restart. I removed Norton because it took up too much processing power behind the scenes.

I tried a few other spyware scanners (SpywareDoctor and Windows Defender) and they all wouldn't complete the scan. I got rid of some spyware, but my system just didn't run right.

Now I can't complete any really complex tasks. Burning DVDS and cds, ripping them, converting movies to iPod format, moving large files to an external harddrive. I start all of these, and the system just freezes. And even if I start Task Manager, it doesn't show anything using processing power or memory. It just locks up, and I eventually get a brief blue screen of death and the system restarts.

Sorry to be so long, but I wanted to give all relevant (or seemingly relevant) info.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong with my laptop, and why it won't do any serious jobs?

ooh......that's tough, I would Google it and check for symptoms of a virus infection. There is some stuff out there like this, when you run a virus scan, and the scan goes across that file, it simply activates the Shutdown.exe file and screws you over.
