Laptop dead?

A few months ago I had a problem with my laptop where the monitor kept freezing . I did a restore from an Acronis backup . Everything was OK until last night when the display just turned grey & black then blank . Now it won't even turn on . The blue light in the start button comes on for a few seconds then off , then on again . Is there anyway to fix it ?

sounds like it could be a power problem if it wont even POST, i take it you have it hooked up to a functional A/C adapter?
what laptop is it?

Thanks for the reply . I just attempted to start it up again it booted into Windows & the startup repair came up, began to run & then the monitor went multi-coloured . I had to turn it off with the off button again . Now it's back as it was going on & off

My money's on a bad motherboard. Sounds like a chipset coming loose. Geforce 6100's were notorious for doing that. You don't happen to have an Athlon based laptop, do you? Or one with dedicated video?

Looks like you have yourself the exact same laptop as my grandparents :P Apparently the HP G6000 has the same guts as what my grandparents had (Compaq F700). Chances are you could make it run again using the heat-gun technique, but it'll probably die soon after.

If you wish to attempt a repair, here's what you need to do... Completely disassemble the laptop so you can remove the motherboard from the plastic casing. Remove the heatsync from the board. Find the chipset near the processor (I'm quite sure it's covered/cool by the same HS as the CPU. Now grab yourself a heatgun and roast that chip. While heating, find a blunt object like the butt of a screwdriver and mash around the edges. Flip the board over and heat the underside of the chip, applying pressure to the chip itself. I can't say how long to do this, just use your best judgment... You don't want to burn anything or desolder any surrounding components.

Now let it cool off, reassemble and test. This worked every time for me, though the computer died again within about 24 hours :P
