Laptop decision... which would you choose.

Hey everyone

Its computer buying time for the family and I'm trying to make the decision.

My options are...

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 w/ the i7

Dell Inspiron 17R w/ the i7 ( http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-17r-se-7720/pd )

Duties will consist of internet browsing, streaming video, a small amount of business work, RC flight simulator, basically general household usage. Also, It will be used as the Bedroom entertainment unit, I will hook it up to the TV for netflix, etc.

I'm buying it from a local computer shop... not a big box store. My salesman is telling me that the Dell would be better suited for my needs ( although we both agree the lenovo is a better quality machine )

The dell comes in at $300 more then the lenovo. BUT Dell has a 17" 1080P screen vs 15" 720P, 1 TB HDD w/32GB ssd vs 500gb HDD, and a dedicated graphics card vs Intel 4000 graphics.
The downside to the Dell is it can only be bought with Windows 8... so I will have to invest $100 immediately in a copy of windows7. ( Windows 7 is a must have )

I think I'm leaning towards the Dell... but wanted to get an expert opinion from the folks on the forum. Thanks

I would go with the Dell for sure. There's no doubt about that, but I would like to ask, why is Windows 7 a must-have? I personally have Windows 8 and it's decent, I'm using a bunch of things to modify the look and feel to model Windows 7. It benefits are that it's more lightweight, more secure, future-proofed, and has all the new fancy features as well. But thats just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. Hope I could help, and hope you are happy with whatever decision you make in the end.

So i thought I was going to go with the dell .... but I did something I usually never do and read the reviews on the computer.

I'm not liking what I read... but should that stop me ??? Asking my salesman what his opinion is regarding quality/durability etc. is useless

I have started to look into the Lenovo ideapad series, are they a solid built unit?

I'm sorry to ask questions .... but the guy I'am dealing with at the computer shop is not the best for answers, its like pulling teeth. I was being asked by family what to get for a Christmas gift and I said if they couldn't think of anything, get me a gift card to the computer shop and Ill put that towards my lap top.

I have always had good luck with Dells, but if quality is your concern then the Lenovo Thinkpad is probably the best option. Just remember you cannot get quality and performance at a low price.

I have heard some bad things about the idea pads so I would stay away personally.

A 17" is nice. BUT...nothing portable about it. (like carrying it around).
I have one. Also have a netbook. Small screen. My next one will be a 15".
