Laptop died on me Gateway (M-6823) Long read

yea when i bought my laptop i upgraded the memory and they made me a DVD recovery disk

Ah! Have you tried booting from that? It may be a drive image restorer that you can boot from...maybe. Frankly, that sounds a little too technical for Best Buy to pull off.

On second thought, I doubt they could have crammed a full Vista install plus applications onto even a dual-layer DVD. ...eh...it's worth a shot. Your last option is to just purchase another OS/license.

yea that was my first option but no luck nothing happened. Thats why I questioned the disk is says drivers and apps but nothing about OS. My xp for my desktop has 3 disks. Well when I get off work 2morrow im going to pick up a hard drive and Ill try that disk one more time. If not Ill just buy Vista brand new. The drivers and apps are included if I buy new correct. Do you know any place online I could buy a 250 GB Serial ATA drive cheaper than best buy or any store here n town. Thanks

Well, if you have already tried booting from the Best Buy disk and it won't, then you will need to try another OS installation disk. You can try the XP disks from your desktop, but the Vista license code for your laptop will not work with it (unless it's a Vista Business downgrade compatible one) and the license from your desktop is non-transferable. In other words, you may be able to install XP with the disks and license from your desktop, but you will not be able to activate it.

For inexpensive 2.5" drives, your best bet is probably an online retailer like Newegg.com. Brick and Mortar stores are going to be higher, but sometimes that is the only option if you are in a "need it now" situation. You could check around for a smaller computer shop. You can find some deals in those places every once in a while.

Let us know if you are able to get further in the install with the new drive.

well i got a new hard drive I tried the recovery disk I had from bestbuy but when it loaded it said no bootmgr. So I tried the XP from my desktop it transfer everything to the hard drive when it was complete a message came up Set-up is starting windows then i get the blu screen windows has been shut down to prevent damage. I dont know what else to do i might as well take it to someone else to fix it. what is a boot mgr. My mother has vista also she has a gateway laptop also she has the org. vista disk would that work in my laptop
