laptop display issue

I bought an old used IBM Thinkpad laptop. It boots up fine and runs Windows 95.

The problem is with the display. The image of the desktop is smaller than the screen. I tried the usual fix of going to "Display Properties"--> Settings --> and was going to change screen resolution/area so the desktop filled the entire screen.

However, the area where you change the screen resolution was greyed out and couldn't be changed. I dont know why this is.

I have no other ideas of what the problem is or how to fix it...any advice??

A few years ago one of the members of my team brought me a ThinkPad they just bought from a friend. It had this same issue. I played with the damn thing for a week and never figured it out. I'd be interested in hearing the resolution to this one. Sorry I can't help.
