Laptop display very very dim.

My Sony K25 with ubuntu has a strange issue. The screen when loading ubuntu on start up gets really dim. Almost to the point you can't see anything. It's fine when you first start the machine up. But when it loads the OS it goes dim, and I can't get it to brighten up. According to ubuntu the brightness is already at 100%. What could be wrong. I've already tired opening and closing the screen, and played with the on/off switch for the screen by the latch. Nothing helped. Any ideas?
 
Wish I had a ubuntu install disc here I'd just try reinstalling the OS. I would just make one, but I'm on a really slow internet connection, and it would take a week to download the .iso file. I'm thinking it's hardware related anyway.

Whats up my fellow MN resident?

I wouldnt think its hardware if its working until it boots into the OS...
