Laptop fan VERY loud

The fan on my HP Compaq nc8000 started making this loud whirring noise a few weeks ago. It only was noisy sometimes and would stop after giving the bottom of the laptop a good whack, or just putting it to sleep and waking it up again.

Today it started making this noise whenever the fan is spinning and it won't stop. It has also now started making an even louder metallic noise while spinning. It really doesn't sound good.

First thing I'm going to do is get some compressed air and blow it through the vent in the back and hope it's just some dust/cat hair that is stuck on it. However, I fear that won't do the trick.

I've never really worked on a computer myself, but I feel confident that I can replace the fan following the maintenance and service guide.

1) Does anyone have any other recommendations to try before replacing the fan assembly?

2) Would you recommend buying a used fan assembly? Or is new the only way to go?

3) Does anyone have any recommended websites (reputation and price) for buying PC laptop parts?
I've gotten burned a few times buying used electronics on ebay and would NOT recommend that route to anyone.

a metallic sound...that may be the bearing in the fan. once that goes your fan will not work at all. If you can take it apart, put some grease on the bearing. this will give it some more life before you'll have to get a new one. my hp compaq laptop had the same problem.
compressed air is good, do that first before replacing/greasing the fan.
