Laptop for $1000

What laptop would you suggest for a budget of around $1000? I would like it to be able to handle newer games as well as be good for media-related things.

Desktop is better for gaming when it comes to the price but if your like me and on the go a lot then get the laptop and go with hp, you will get a better graphic card for the price. Go to the hp site and the one for just over 1k will come with a 2.0 Ghz dual core, 2 GB memory, nvidia 9600m GT 512 MB card, and a 250 GB HDD. I would recommend that you upgrade it through the site to 64 bit vista and get the 2.4 Ghz dual core with 4 GB memory.

I'd go with a business grade Vostro from Dell. They are really good value for the money. I was able to configure this one for under $900.

Vostro 1510:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5870 (2.0GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
Operating System:
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium, Service Pack 1
LCD Panel:
15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WXGA+LCD Display w/TrueLife™
Memory:
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
Optical Drives:
8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+/-R write capability, with Roxio Creator
Video Cards:
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS 8400M
Hard Drives:
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Wireless Cards:
Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Wi-Fi Internal Card
Sound Card:
High Definition Audio 2.0
Processor Branding:
Intel Core 2 Duo Label
Primary Battery:
6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Thanks for the input.
Normally I would get a desktop, especially considering mines a few years old now. But for the present, a laptop is preferable in my situation. Just out of curiosity, what's your opinion on alienware?

Alienware IMO is just for people who don't really know what they're doing and don't wanna research but have alot of money to spend who know they can get a quality product and pay in some cases 2/3 times more than it would take to build it yourself.

Alienware is overpriced. A lot of the laptops have motherboard problems down the road.

There is a customer @ work that has a bad video card in hers. It's an Area 51 from probably three or four years ago.

Could I get a little more info on which laptop it is you're talking about? I'd like to take a closer look at it but I'm not sure which one you mean.

Here's a very similar laptop but by Acer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115506, I don't hear too many bad things about Acer, they're ok from what i hear. But what i would do is get this laptop instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220343R and try it out and see if they're are any problems. Just because it's an open box doesn't mean anything is wrong with it most of the time, plus the original laptop (non-open boxed) has a good rating from the customers and i'm not totally sure if newegg would let you return the laptop in exchange for a different laptop, say that acer one i posted up first. But the Asus definitly has alot goin for it, 4 Gbs of ram, an Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53Ghz, a gig a video ram opposed to the 512 Acer's video ram. Just about the only catch with the open box Asus laptop is that it comes with nothing but the laptop, so you would need to go out and get a charger, not THAT big of a deal.

People just pay for a pretty case, BUT some people don't. You know about those very select few gamer "professionals"? Theres a kid in my class who just won a brand new Alienware laptop, i didn't ask em what model but he said it was around 3.5K!. . . He's also won 3-4 of the top of the line video cards over the past 2 years. Anyway! time fore me to get out the old debit card and start BUYING my parts from newegg now. . . . .

DON'T GET A LAPTOP your lieing to yourself you don't need it. You will wish you got a desktop.
You don't know his situation, like for example I'm in the Navy so when I deploy it's nice to have a laptop that can game. gla3dr go to hp.com and go click on there laptops. its the entertainment powerhouse series. If you click on that and then click on the customize button you can upgrade what you want on the laptop. As recommend upgrade to vista 64 bit and do the 4gb of memory. Dell are nice but for the price there graphic cards suck and the alienware are over priced.

Is he in the navy? How often does he need to leave with his computer? Alienware laptops are cheaper then dell, the desktops is what is overpriced. Course it all depends on what your getting.

not really, a lot of people like portability and functionality, not functionality that sits in one spot and takes up a whole lot of room :P (ok, not THAT much room, but enough room

Most people don't know what they would even do with a laptop until they get it. I don't REALLY need for anything but it'd be nice to take it with me to school so i didnt have to worry about the crappy schools computers, and when me and my band jams or whatever it'd be nice to record some stuff. You would definitly find purpose for a laptop once you get one.

Quite the heated discussion this has become lol. You see autoboot, normally I would agree with you on getting a desktop instead of a laptop. I really would like to upgrade mine or get a new one. But in this case, that just wouldn't be practical. The reason I'm going with a laptop is because I need the portability.

You could have purposes to get one already, then find some more once you get them too! Also laptops are really convenient to have, instead of wasting a bunch of CDs, USB flash drives or what not to take stuff to your group work partners' house just bring your laptop, then do it on your own computer where you know you have all the right stuff, I'd rather not bring a desktop to my friends house. It's like if someone wants to buy a PSP and is asking about it, then someone on the forum comes in YOU'RE LYING TO YOURSELF, YOU DON'T NEED A PSP GET A PS3! PSP is the Playstation PORTABLE because people like portability :) PSP is the netbook and PS3 is the custom desktop in the wicked case :)

Haha you mean in the barbeque:D. But yeah that's exactly what I mean. The portability is the reason for getting the laptop. Getting a desktop will defeat the purpose of me buying a computer right now.
