Laptop for college.

Hi all. I'm going to be buying a laptop for college, and this one came up through the school's discount with CDW.

Is this a good deal? I know I'll need to buy a CD drive, but that should be okay. Also, I'm going into engineering and the department said I should consider upgrading my memory and possibly video card. Is it possible to upgrade the video card if there's one integrated? I know I can upgrade the memory, so that's not a problem.

Thanks.

No its not possible to upgrade the laptop video card. So it would be wise to buy one with as much graphical power as you can afford. The hard drive is kinda small and slow, but since its an overall small computer I guess its okay. And if the engineering department told you to up the RAM, then it would be a good decision to do so. Maybe look into buying a semi-larger screen size, that way you can get more of what you want.

very high end gaming laptop has upgradable video cards. i doubt your school provides those with discounts.

You are better off getting a sturdy laptop for school work that is reliable and then invest in a desktop for gaming. You can build a decent gaming desktop for not that much money.

Then you can possibly go with a lower end laptop and have two computers so if one crashes you at least have some sort of back up.

i disagree... i love having a mobile gaming laptop... and i love using my laptop for school. plus, who wants to haul a sh!ty laptop around that will be out dated in the next year. point is, a desktop might be good for some, but laptops rule!

its all how you use it. I'd much prefer a desktop for gaming than a laptop, but since I'm in college as well. Laptops will have to do for me gaming wise until I build my own (around Starcraft II time). My laptop is very good for the games I play so I'm happy. And besides, college is for studying, meeting new people, and experienceing life, not sitting in your dorm room with a major desktop gaming on your free time.

how about this laptop as opposed to the tablet?

would I be able to upgrade the hard drive and graphics card in that laptop, or no?

also, the tablet is getting upgraded from 1gb to 2gb of ram, and better components. which laptop do you think would be the better buy?

unless you know alot about laptops I would say not to upgrade the video card and just get a laptop with a good graphics card

well, i'd rather just buy these ones directly from the agreement that CDW has with purdue, because they come with 4 years parts, theft, and labor warranty, a loaner laptop if it needs to be repaired, and a bunch of cool stuff already loaded onto them

is the one I linked a few posts above feasible, though? i guess I don't really need a new graphics c ard or anything, i just want to be able to play games lik CS:S, WoW, and the new SC2 when it comes out. would both of those laptops be able to play those games?

What degree are you getting? You could very easily NEED a good GC and Ram... with some of the software you might want (or have) to use. 3D cad software, video/photo editing...

I'd just get a nice one from dell or HP.

i don't want a dell, or a laptop from any other provider than through the agreement that is listed above. I like the service with the agreement.

if I buy either of those two laptops that I linked before though, will i be able to run cad-type programs, and some rendering programs, as well as a few games? i'm not sure because it's a tossup between that tablet, which I want for taking notes, and the pavilion.

get the 1st one.
but let me say this. i think in 2 years, when your computer is out dated, you will be sad that you didnt spend the same money on something more powerful from a different place.
