Hey guys,

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I found a laptop ( Compaq V6000) in the trash with all components. I'm trying to repair it...

I don't have the power cable but I have the battery. At home, I have an AC adapter with different output plugs so I tried it. It looks like it worked, adjusted the polarity and set it up to 12V, a blue light comes on at the AC plug in.

When I press on/off button, it starts (well actually not really) for less than a second and then stops. What could be the problem? (I have some ideas but I don't think I'm right).

Thanks for your help!

These models are famous for bad graphics chipsets, look up the heatgun fix for them if you want to try and get it running again.

Also you want an 18.5v power supply, using anything less risks damaging the laptop further or damaging the power supply.

So it should be a graphic card problem? I'm not very good on components lol. I thought it would be the power supply or motherboard since it doesn't even starts the vent...

thanks for the info, I'll try and find the right adaptor then.

Actually it occurs to me that if you're using a 12v PSU then what it's doing now isn't really relevant. Get a good power supply on it and try it and then we can go from there. But yes, a bad GPU on these can make the laptop behave as you've described.

Ok thanks for the info, I still have some hope then :D

Not only do you need to worry about the voltage being 18.5V but your adapter also needs to be able to supply 3.5A of current. The voltage is the most critical but if you don't supply enough amperage then the laptop may not power up. If it does power up it may not be able to charge the battery and the laptop will cause the adapter to burn out trying to draw the current.

Ok I bought the correct adaptator and it starts. I see the Windows loading screen and then it gives me this BSOD:

Any ideas?

Nope, unmountable boot volume means there are errors on the drive or you have a bad drive that is unfixable. Use the drive manufacturers disk diagnostic utility to scan the drive for errors.

Update:

I was able to install Ubuntu 8.04 and boot on HDD. The problem is that it lags a lot, takes a long time to boot and I can't install the updates... I click on the notification icon, then click on install all updates but nothing happens.
I'm guessing the HDD is dead or is it something else?

UPDATE: Finally got to installing the updates, it's downloading right now.
