Laptop freezes after 5-10 minutes. Recently reformatted and had 1 GB ram installed.

Hey guys.

I re-imaged my laptop yesterday.

I didn't notice any freezing problems.

Today I had 1 GB RAM extra installed by my college repair center for free.

Today I noticed my laptop randomly freezes (twice in Windows, and once while shutting down).

Freeze = it looks like my mouse isn't moving ... everything stops moving ... control alt delete doesn't bring up the end program thing.

Is it the memory upgrade (dxdiag shows 1.5 GB now, but maybe my RAM is loose or something) or a problem with the reformat?

Thanks very much.

If its not too much trouble i would advise to delete the partition. Pop in your XP cd and then select the second option (run off disk) then get to the c prompt and type in Fdisk, go through all the options and delete all the partitions you see then restart and XP should reformat the drive for you.

Thats a pretty vague run down, if you need more indepth ill post, but you seem to have some understanding of computers so i figure youll figure it out!

Make sure whatever you installed lately dont have a virus or ad ware in it . second can can be running out of space in hdd . Or it can be over heatting and it frezzes into place. Hmm make your not over heatting. Then if not try reinstalling windows and CLEAN THE HDD OUT ! Try that and have a good day !

If you just had the RAM installed and the problems occur right afterwards, I'd remove the RAM to be sure it's not a bad or slightly incompatible chip. I find that easier than diagnosing lots of software :P

so some new developments.

Since I've made this topic... the laptop has not crashed (this is like 5 hours later).

I've tried to semi-"push" the laptop's RAM to see if that is what was wrong (I opened up 8 Mozilla Firefoxes, 4 Windows Media Players, 3 Internet explorers, AIM, and Winamp) and it still has not crashed.

So hopefully (knock on wood) my laptop has somehow fixed itself and I won't need to worry about it again. If in the case that it starts freezing again, I'll have my college repair center inspect the RAM with me.

Thanks!

So I reformatted again today at the campus Help Desk after I came back from basketball and saw my laptop was frozen AGAIN!

And it is still freezing.

The RAM seems to be doing it's job until it freezes (I see an improvement in my computer's performance).

So, I've downloaded something from Microsoft's website "Ram Tester" diagnostic tool.

I'm going to see what results that gives me.

If the results of the Microsoft diagnostic I downloaded are good...
1.) Should I have the installation lady pop out and pop back in the RAM? and then see if I still get the problems?
2.) Should I have her remove the RAM and see if I still get the problems?
3.) Could it be that my power cable does not give enough power for the RAM upgrade?

Microsoft RAM diagnostic tests were all Successful.

Can my RAM still be bad?

I updated my BIOS to my most current version now.

Instead of freezing, there some to be occassional slowdowns and then it fixes itself.

UPDATE:
Ever since I installed the Java update that kept popping up in my taskbar... the slowdowns/freezes have stopped. Hopefully that was the problem. I'll keep you guys updated to see if I get any more slowdowns or freezes.

I don't have the tools to open up my laptop (and it also may void my 3 yr full coverage warranty).

I can have the repair service look at my laptop and they'll decide what to do.

But, a few weeks ago (before the RAM installation) the laptop wouldn't boot (it kept saying "Fan Error")

When I plugged in the power, it booted, and I never got the Fan Error again. Is it possible that all I need is a replacement fan? (could the freezing be a cooling issue with the extra power needed for the RAM upgrade?)

It is could be either your fan or the power supply cutting out your motherboard. better get it fixed or you will be replacing a motherboard. I have just had this problem with mine. I have a new gateway and it wasnt getting but about 300w power supply which inturn wasnt getting my fan to moving right which in turn crashed my motherboard.
