Laptop Hard drive buzzing sound

I have an HP Pressario that is about 3-4 years old. I have either a 60 or 80 Gb Toshiba HDD that has started to make a buzzing noise, no clicking, and I am not able to access it when it starts making this noise. This happened about a month ago, so I took it out of the case and tapped/shook it a little and let it sit out of the computer overnite. Upon putting it back in, it worked so I forgot about backing it up... dohh. Anyway, the noise came back last night and all the programs froze, and I was not able to Ctrl Alt Del or anything like that. I just stopped it cold and removed the drive again. This morning it lasted about 5 minutes before it froze up again. My question is: Is the hard drive toast? and if so, is there anyway for me to get data off it, like some special process or place I could send it to that would not cost obscene amounts of money? Or is this something that I could fix? I don't know much about hard drives or if one can fix them on one's own. Thanks a lot.

I am pretty sure it is "running" as in it is spinning, but the noise is just horrible and everything freezes when it is making that sound. My professor seems to think that the discs may be out of balance and wobbling but there is really no way to tell without going into a clean room to take the thing apart. even then... what the hell would I know?! A side note, I did get it to boot up while the laptop was in a vertical position, i.e. the computer was propped up on the vertical plane.

I think we need to know if the laptop has been dropped or 'bounced' recently, because I had this problem, and, sorry to say, a couple of months later, my laptop died completely. What I'd recommend is to try and backup the data while it works OK. I am pretty sure that the disk is spinning from what you have described, but it looks like you'll be needing a new disk, because it seems as though you've dropped or bounced the laptop, meaning that something inside the disk has gone wrong. I wouldn't recommend disassembling your laptop, but if you think a new disk is needed, then I would consult a professional, unless you know exactly what you are doing.

nope, no bouncing or dropping has occured. it is basically a desktop-laptop because it never moves. I am pretty sure I can handle putting a new drive in, as installing it is simply a matter of separating the old one from the "lid" of the case, and formatting/etc shouldn't be too much problem as I've worked with an external hd before. I've got pretty good resources in my Physical Chemistry Professor. Thanks for all the help. I'm going to back up my stuff on dvd's and buy a new drive. Thanks again.

Need any more help in the future, remember to post, PM me, or mail to [email protected]. I do many computer services and refit hard drives quite regularly for low prices, so if you need a hand, contact me, or I'll fit for a low charge. I'm here to help everyone.
