Laptop Hard drive issue

I had someone bring me a laptop today with a Samsung mp0402h 40GB HD.

Short and skinny is that when I removed the HD from the unit and plugged it into a external drive it said the HD was corrupted.Per the owners request he wanted The HD formatted and Windows re-installed.

I formatted the drive and now it works fine.I can put files in it and view them just fine.

Question is this,,Can this HD be trusted to store information on now?I am thinking about reloading windows xp back on here but not sure if I should just start over with a new HD?

I wouldn't trust it for very long.

I had an issue with an older P3 Omnibook 6000. I formatted the hard drive and installed some programs. Then, before going to bed I shut it down and turned it back on for one more test and it didn't do anything but give me a gray screen. The hard drive had died.

I'd ask them if they want to pay for a new hard drive or not (Unless your willing to pay for it), after passing on the info that you don't know how long it would last.

use spinrite and run diagnostics.
best case scenario is that person walked through a magnetic field
worse case is actual mechanical failure

well I answered my own question.

Once this drive heated up the desktop would not recognize it as a external drive anymore.I put it in the freezer for about 20 min and took it backout. It read it for a little while then when it heated up again it pucked.

Its getting chunked and a new one installed.

Thanks guys.

lol, the freezer method is one of the ways to recover a hd for a short period before it dies. within that time i hope you recovered your goods.
