Hi I need to transfer data from my Toshiba mk1646gsx it says its sata online but the thing is different it has 15 plates and 7 for power or other way around. Also if I just connect it to my computer I can take out all the data I need right. Or would windows not allow me there both windows btw mine 7 the other im not sure its my friends original laptop broken. Thanks in advance.

The OS isn't as important as what filesystem the disk is formatted with as to whether you can read the data or not. Most likely the drive is formatted as NTSF but even if it uses FAT32 you'll be able to read it.

You should be able to attach the SATA drive to a SATA port on your mobo and read the data unless the drive is defective. I'm not sure what you mean by it being different, there may be some kind of adapter attached to the drive but SATA is a standard so it shouldn't be different.

I figured it all out. The hard drive was in an encasement (for other people who are also have the same problem) and I had to unscrew the encasement to get to the hard drive. From there I just plugged in the cables and I downloaded all the files by going to my computers and just copying and pasting from the hard drive. First laptop I bought it for $20 it's old but it should work fine with Ubuntu.:)
