Laptop hard drive

I have an old laptop that I would like to remove the hard drive from to use a an external drive. Is this possible? And if so, what would I need for connectors and enclosures to make it work?

It should be possible, unless the laptop harddrive isn't 2.5" formfactor. As for connectors, the enclosure should come with the IDE cable.
 
The IDE cable that comes with the enclosure, how will it plug into whatever computer I want to use with the HD? does it terminate in a USB, or some other connetion?
 
USB if it's an external enclosure, there are also some 2.5" to 3.5" IDE converters that connect just like an internal hard drive. There may also be some firewire enclosures.
