I have a Compaq Presario V6000(V6133CL) Series Laptop.
Product# RG286UA#ABA
Serial # CNF6401YQV
It had Win XP Proffessional(Media Center) on it.
I have completely wiped the HD and installed WIN XP/SP2 Home Edition(retail) on it.I went to Hp and checked for the drivers for the hardware, but I'm not sure what I need and do not need from the download list at Hp.
How do I find out what hardware is installed on my laptop so I can get the right drivers and any other downloads I need? Do I get what I need from Hp or some other site?
Another question can I install XP retail and use the key from a preinstalled
XP from an old Emachine that I use to have that is no longer used.It bit the dust many yrs ago.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks Cool pad, I"ll give Everest a try. I'm not installing any of the HP software back onto the laptop. I went to the HP web site and they had 3 downloads that I'm not sure about?
Listed under Software/Internet Access:
1. HP Update and HP Software Update Critical Security Update
Listed under Software/Solutions:
2. HP Software Update
Listed under Software/System Management:
3. System Default Settings

Still have the question about installing XP Retail but using the XP Key# from an old Emachine, can I or won't I beable to activate it ?

Thanks

Coolpad was actually a spammer, please ignore their post.

You won't be able to use the key that you have if using an XP home retail install cd.

The only drivers you will need are the following.

chipset
audio
graphics
network

Thanks johnb35,
You have been a great help to me. I really appriciated every time you have helped.
I do have Win 7 Home that I might put on the laptop, but there are somethings I don't like about Win 7. Guess the saying is true, you can't teach a old dog new tricks.
Thanks again

Thats what I said in the beginning when I had XP. I have grown to love windows 7 now. XP is outdated and insecure. I would highly recommend installing windows 7 if you can. However, if your system has 2gb or less of memory then stay with XP unless you can upgrade to at least 4gb of memory.

Having used everything from 98SE to windows 8, I honestly have never liked 7 at all. It is completely unnecessary, and to me at least, difficult to use. And all windows OSes are unsecure. If you want security when browsing the net, use a Linux VM that is completely encrypted. That is about as secure as you will get connected to a internet source.

johnb35,my laptop will only support 2 gb's ram, right now I only have 1gb ram.may add 1gb more later on.
wolfeking,I have not tried Linux VM, I could always install it on my extra Hd and try it.
Only would take a few minutes to swap out Hd's.

no no no. Linux VM means Linux Virtual Machine. It is installed within your windows environment.

If you have an extra drive, then just try out Ubuntu 10.04.3 (it is much less memory dependent than 12.04). It can be found here (http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/) just choose PC desktop CD, and burn it to a CD. If you do not have a CD drive, then use YUMI (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/) to put it on a USB flashkey and boot from that. Once you try it, you may like linux. These days it is not at all difficult to use and is far more secure than any version of windows. Just don't be expecting a lot of games to work on it natively. The up side is it is free and comes with a software center that is pumped full of other free software to do pretty much anything you could ever want to do, besides big title games.
