Laptop HD dilemma.

I purchased an external case for an old Inspiron 1100 2.5" laptop harddrive, only to find that the drive didn't fit the tray. I figured that the IDE connector would be standard; however, it seems Dell has adapted the Hitachi Travelstar unit purposefully, so you would be stuck buying a replacement directly from them...

Nonetheless, I took apart the remainder of the laptop to see if I would be able to remove the IDE adapter - no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas so that I will not lose the data altogether?
A simple modification or adapter..?

I'm quite sure all Hitachi 2.5" drives are standard 44 pin IDE drives. Unless you have an SATA drive, it's probably an adapter or something.

thats weird... i know hp uses removable adapters to connect their hdds, but to have an adapter that is permanately mounted seems a bit foolish. i dont have much advice to offer other than possibly to compair pictures of the normal IDE config to what you have now. i agree with you that it is probably an ide hdd.
