Laptop HD to Desktop

]I'm trying to clone between my desktop HD & Laptop HD. I bought at Fry's an HD adapter - 44 pin to 40 pin IDE & connected to desktop. There is a 2 wire plug from the adapter that was plugged into desktop. Bios doesn't recognize the laptop HD. Any ideas on how to get it recognized?
 
Sorry about the multiple postings. The laptop can be connected to the desktop via either a firewire or ethernet through the home network router. The Acronis cloning software doesn't seem to recognize the laptop when it is connected these ways. Do you think it would be any different with the item you suggest? Acronis always seems to recognize HD's connected to the 40 pins on the motherbd.
