in my laptyop i have a 40 giger i want to upgrade to an 80 gig or 100 gig is there anything i need to know execpet the type.

or weill the lap top be able to handle it.

your HDD is most likely a IDE/ATA drive. as far as simply swapping drives, you shouldnt have any problems. of course, you will have to deal with transferring data, but im assuming you know how to do that ;).
one suggestion. instead of chunking the old HDD, buy an external case ($10-15, newegg.com, meritline.com). that way you still have the 40gb for portable storage. believe me. its worth it!

the laptop is hp but i heard something about the power if you go with something higher then the laptop can handle it will over load it.

i have never heard of that. however i have a hp and my connection is weard. they have a sata and then an addapter to fit with the computer. but since you are upgrading if you have it, just remove it and swap it

ya, the HP adapters are funky... if not for that, i would have already added a 2nd hdd to mine....
and about the power overload or whatever, like you said, no it wont
