ok so i have a Toshiba Satellite M(something) and there is something wrong with it and i cant put my finger on it......so here is what happens....i can start up my computer like normal and all my little things load up like aim, yahoo, and internet explorer... any programs i use that are on my desktop and have a desktop icon if i click them everything is fine.....but if i click a folder to try to get to some information my computer will close the folder and then all my desktop icons go away and i cant acess anything....i can press ctrl+alt+del and then open the same folder again and then every thing pops up again like normal but it will do the same thing if i try to open the folder again....any suggestions?

i can get any information you need if that can help you figure out whats going on.... btw i did a full sweep of my computer with Spy Sweeper and then i did a visrus sweep with Trend Micro Anti Visrus and all came up negative

Sounds like a simple cause from a windows update. Do a system restore point back to a couple days ago (check to see the calendar in restore point and look for a date previously to when the problem arised)

the only restore point i could use was today at 12pm thats the last known good configuration so i did that and it lasts a little longer but it still does it all tho it does not go away until i ctrl+alt+del it now doe sit on its own it just closes the folder and then resets all the icons

It could be a malware infection. We'll just have a look around anyways.

  1. Please download the latest copy of HijackThis from Trend Micro and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on HJTInstall.exe to install it. Click on Install. By default, it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  3. Read through the License Agreement presented to you on the next screen and click on I Accept.
  4. Once installed, HijackThis will start automatically. If it doesn't, please go to your desktop and double click on the HijackThis shortcut created there.
  5. Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
  6. Close HijackThis.

Please post the contents of the post here for the experts to review and help you with the removal.
Note: Do not click on the AnalyzeThis button.

Do not fix any lines you see in HijackThis as most entries are harmless and needed for the normal functioning of Windows.

P.S :Please note that I will not be participating in your fix because I'm still under training. This is just to help the experts here and to save time.

Glad to hear it, but there are still a few more things that need to be removed.

Your logfile shows signs of Viewpoint Manager:
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything bad. It is known to be intrusive, but there is some possibility that it is now being used by those companies to give them info about your habits. It is not considered spyware since this is not clear, but I would not tolerate it on my machine if I didn't install it.

I suggest you remove it. To do so, click on Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. Click on anything related to Viewpoint and click Remove.

Please run HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following entries:

  • [*]R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EA756889-2338-43DB-8F07-D1CA6FB9C90D} - (no file)
    [*]O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
    [*]O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)
    [*]O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

I suggest you check the following entry as well, as it is not a good idea to let P2P programs run on startup:
  • O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe

If you chose to remove Viewpoint, also check the following entry:
  • O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
Please close all open windows except for HijackThis and choose Fix checked

Once done, please do the following:
  • Open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code:
    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\winlogon.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\8A3877E181D81CCD.job

    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\amen option wait
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\amen option wait
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Roam Program Comp About
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the Save as type to All Files and place it on your desktop.

    CFScript.gif

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
CAUTION:
Do NOT mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Also, please do NOT adjust your time format while ComboFix is running.
