how do you reset the operating system on a laptop so that it goes back to factory settings. It was a company laptop so i need a username and password to actually use it. Isnt there something i can do while the computer is starting up to reset the entire thing.
It windows xp pro. It starts up says to push ctrl +alt + delete. and then prompts for a username and password.

Ask the Admin at the "company" where you got it from, as far as we're concerned it could have come from any dodgy person/place.

ok so i start the computer up with the XP disk in it. nothing still boots the same and prompts for a password. So i hit F2 during startup and it goes to the bios. and it prompts me for a password there too. The bios is pheonix. So am i locked out of the wholoe computer or what?

it sound like a computer Password yes you need to find the previous owner to get the password

If you are going to re-install XP, you will have to go to the BIOS and set the boot order so that the cd/dvd drive is first. then restart and it should say to hit any key to continue and then follow the screen instructions. amke sure to formt the HDD. ther are other ways yes, but as everyone knows it is against the rules to post such info

You should be able to press F8 during the boot process to select the boot device, unless that's locked out.

toughbooks are hard to get into. you can try panasonic, maybe they can help you with a bios reset.

this all sounds a bit dodgy...
if u cant ask the admin for his password and you cant get back into the BIOS, you can't do much unless you find a bios password reset disk, or you take out the BIOS battery

I had a legit reason to reset the administrator password on a Windows 2000 laptop that I found at work, a simple Google search can tell you how to make a bootable disk that will do what you're asking.

while it is starting up turn it off by holding the power button down until the computer shuts off, then start it up in safe mode and it shouldnt ask you for a password.

Most likely it will, especially if it's a company computer running a business/professional version of the OS.
