laptop issue...locks up for about 30 seconds

i have a dell inspiron 1720. i have it for a few years now.

a few months ago my system started to lag while doing regular stuff on it. it would just slow down and pretty much be unresponsive. out of nowhere this started happening.

then i noticed that the fan was not turning on. so i was thinking that maybe the laptop was overheating.

so first i formatted the hd, thinking maybe there was a virus on there. that did not work. the system would be on for about 10 minutes or less then slow down and stop being responsive.

while it was doing that, i noticed the fan still not going on. so i put a fan under it to try and keep it cool while in use to see if that would help and it didnt. i downloaded a application from dell to manually turn the fan on and off and that didnt work at first. then the fan started by itself finally.

so i thought maybe the hd was failing. so i bought a new drive, a ssd and installed it and that still doesnt seem to work.

every so often while im using the laptop, it just locks up and the activity light stays solid. the mouse moves, but i cant click anything or do any actions. i have to wait like 30 seconds or more sometimes for the laptopto finish doing whatever it is doing. i have formatted multiple times and thats not solving the issue.

any ideas?
 
Assuming it's not a program you're loading, I'd say it's either RAM or a failing motherboard. Get yourself a copy of memtest and let the test run a few times (say overnight) and confirm there are no errors. It'll also be a good heat/fan test as it'll typically overheat a laptop that's not properly getting cooled.
 
Then I would say you have some type of hardware damage especially if any cooling fans stopped running for any period of time. You may have processor damage due to overheating.
 
I am still having this issue. the laptop just keeps freezing on me for about 1-2 minutes then it works fine. it does it without warning and never consistent.

what kind of hardware failure would be doing this?
