I keep reading how many lappys get fried on their own, or how BATTERIES EXPLODE!!!! lol, either way.... I haven't owned a lappy, but I may consider purchasing one...

What's an expected lifespan?

I've had my Averatec for over a year it's it's been great. No notable problems, though the battery life is slightly worse...

Dad's laptop(PIII 850MHz, probably from 2001 or so) The screen's been shorting out since about two years ago. It'll flicker, sometimes go out. Usally moving it back and forth will correct it. The battery also only lasts about 10 minutes anymore. I'd say the battery died about a year ago(or got this bad)

Yeah... They certinally don't last as long as the older ones did...well, besides the batteries. But they are much cheaper and not nearly as sturdy as they used to be.

yeah i have had my toshiba for five years and have had no problems until recently when the screen started loosing its back light. the only real thing is the batteries. after a few years (depending on how often you use them) they start to die out and battery life is often no longer than 20 mins

I too have an old toshiba laptop that, when first bought, was used like there was no tomorrow. 6 years later, and it's still booming along, although due to the spec of it (400mhz) I never use it now and let my old man play solitaire on it :). Depending on how well you treat them (keep them clean, keep them away from food and/or drinks), handle them gently and not bashing them about, they can last for years.

And also don't smoke near your laptop. :D
The most a laptop can get damaged easily is the HDD. If you use your laptop daily for around 3 years, you need to replace the HDD and the LCD.

i have a 9 year old Toshiba satellite pro !! that was used a hell of alot (for at least 4 years) and is still used on and off now. The old toshiba still runs like new would you believe, the screen has no lines on it or any cracks. The battery still gives you 1.5 hours of use.

So, for 9 years it has worked perfectly and still works to this very day.

I swear i am not kidding !!

dang! heh, so are laptop's meant to last awhile, or no.. ? :'(

It depends the type of company you choose. I have an IBM(Lenovo) T23. It is 6 years old with 512MB of ram 30GB HD Windows Xp pro and it still runs great. The only thing is the battery which lasts around an hour compared to my other laptop which lasts around 6 hours. But that doesn't really matter that much because my T23 is mostly always plugged but if I unplug it and use the battery, it wouldn't be more then 20-30 min.

Hope this helps

Toshiba laptops, from my experience, actually seem extremely surprising for their life spans.

The thing to worry about laptops are the screen, battery, and maybe keys. Everything else should be sturdy enough that it should last you a while. Over time, the screen can become dull and crack, etc.. The keys can start to not operate or respond the strokes very well, letters may disappear, etc.. Battery is always an issue and it'll probably gradually decrease over the time frame you are using it.

Laptops can range from lifespans.. so it may depend on the brand and manufacturer for this. If you plan on having it for a long long time (i hope most people do) then get a name brand that you yourself can trust. Also, there are warranties and extended warranties also.

To be honest, although their desktop machines arent the greatest, if you pay enough money Dell offer some nice laptops. I've used a fair few of them and they seem pretty sweet to use.

Yes, Dell pc's are not the best and some even consider them just problems but their laptops are pretty top notch. I've been in sites and ratings where dell laptops are rated number 1.

But then again in saying that I bet half the people that were even considering Dell as the people to purchase a laptop from have been put off from the recent, or rather not so recent battery exploding laptops. Which is a shame because only like what, 3 actually blew up?

im sure now that AMD and Intel has made low power consumption cpus, laptops should have a longer lifespan. right?

Laptop life expectancy varies widely on a bunch of different variables some of which (but not limited to) are brand, Usage, and environment. I’m certified to repair Dell’s but they aren’t always the best out there.

Example, I just went through a refit of 40 Panasonic Tough book laptops I had in my organization. These laptops were used exclusively outside the facility going in and out of people’s homes all day long. They were subjected to extreme conditions to say the least. In the 4 years of their service I never had to change out one screen. The biggest problem I faced was that the hinges didn’t hold up. Also due to the carelessness of the users I had to replace a lot of Motherboards because they would break the power supply connections to the board by not being careful and ripping out the power cords.

Now I have about 500 various Dells that never leave the comfort of the workplace. Yet there is a steady stream of broken ones that cross my desk. Issues like broken screens, bad HDs, USB ports failed broken screens, bad wireless cards and broken keyboards.

What you need to do is some research and pick the one that best meets the needs of what you are going to do with it. Picking a laptop because your neighbor has a specific brand is silly and you could end up regretting it.

Oh, and of course price plays a part in it. The Panasonics cost $3000 +. They didn’t break much but customer support sucked when they did. The Dells were $1200 +. They break more often it seems but Dell is good at sending what I need when I need it.

I also have some Fujitsu laptop/tablets but I haven’t had many problems with them yet.

I hope this helps

Oh yeah, Battries are always an issue no matter what the brand....
