I have a store bought hp pavillion ze5185 laptop. The screen is shot. It there a way to fix this? How? If not, is there a way to hook it up an external monitor so that I can use it? This is not a computer that I really need, but I need some data off the hard drive. So, If there is a way to do this, what would that be? The computer will start and run, you just can't see anything.

According to the manual you should have an external monitor port, as it is called in the manual. Just connect a monitor there and you should be able to use the laptop.

Here's a picture from the manual. Number 19 is what you're interested in.

Exactly as said above. There are replacement LCD screens, though not cheap. Since you don't really use the laptop, hooking up a monitor to it is probably your best bet.

Monitor Died

I have tried to hook up an external monitor, but I have not been able to see anything. Is the a key that I need to push or something? Is their steps that I need to take to be able to use the external monitor?

is the screen actually broken or can you see the text but the image is very dim? if its only the backlight that isn't turning on you might be able to get an inverter to allow the backlight to come on again, however it could be that the backlight has actually died

Dead Monitor

I can't see anything on the screen. The computer lights up (sounds as though it is starting up). I have attached it to an external monitor, and I still can't see anything. I tried to hit the "fn+F5" to switch between the monitors, but that was to no avail.

take the hard disk out and put it into another notebook... preferably one with a similar/same spec
Bear in mind the chassis on the drive will need changing if its being put in a different type of system

Is that the only way to get the information off the hard drive? I don't have another hp lap top. Is there no way to get into the harddrive without physically opening it up?

the hard drive should be easily accessable withough doing anything major to the unit... its usually under a hatch on the bottome or maybe on the side.
You should be able to get hold of an adaptor that will let you connect it to a normal IDE cable

Memory Removal

Okay, I have removed the hard drive (I have done it before, but didn't realize it). Where would I go to get a cable to be able to plug it into a standard IDE cable?

Im having the same problem except , i can see a little bit of the computer , and im trying to put an external monitor on it too , but when i did that it said the external monitor had "no signal" .... so im kinda lost....
