on my laptop, there are black spots in some areas... just wondering how it got there and how i can prevent it in the future...

Dead pixels are defective pixels on your screen. LCD screens are made up of millions of tiny little "boxes" (pixels). If you get real close to your screen, and have good eyesight, you can probably see what I mean. When one of these pixels stops working, its considered 'dead'.
If the pixel looks (and stays) white, its called a hot pixel. Other dead pixels would be solid colors. Yours sounds hot:
the spots are light and i can still see thru it
Usually manufacturers don't replace screens unless there are more than 1 (usually between 5 and 10) dead pixels but some companies will for just 1.

do you have screenshots of it? your not sure what they are, guys/gals here are misunderstanding what they are.. pictures are best.
