Laptop/Netbook help

Hi,i am going to join an engineering college next month, hence planning to get a laptop/net book.I basically need it for downloading course material, video lectures and to make power point presentations.
It is something i should be able to carry around easily (from my room-library-hall) also i want to keep the budget as low as possible (around 300-400$)
I have asked a few people for suggestions and they gave a thumbs up for Dell Inspiron Mini 10
So, to all the techies here,i would like to know its pro/cons and if possible, any better alternatives.

I have an Asus Eee netbook which i like.
Portable yes, small screen but works well and light.
Netbooks do not have a cd/dvd drive. requires an external.
you can pick up a cd/dvd burner for less than $50.00.
don't think its a biggie but internal would be convenient.

My Asus Eee did come with a recovery and installation cd.
thats important.

One other thing comes to mind. Engineering. If it was electrical or
electronic engineering you might want to consider on if they make
it a dedicated 9 pin serial port. Dell is the only one that have them.
a converter from usb to 9 pin serial wont work for programming plc's
or eprom in industry. if this is not your field then don't worry about it.
it does not apply to you.

I might be taking Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering...so what are the specifications for that course?

power transmissions, communications, motor controls, plc's, computers and integrated circuits thats all used in industry. Allen Bradly is a biggie in small industry. its a must learn.

i was a electrician by trade with a degree in industrial electronics. Ive spent the last 17 yrs in project management and retired with 37yrs. im done now.
life is good. made good money. good luck with your adventure. don't give up.

laptop recommendation

Hi there,

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 is a great netbook. It has a larger keyboard than most netbooks, which is a really nice feature if you are going to spend a significant amount of time on your netbook. However, as some of the other users pointed out, it does not have any internal optical drives. If you increase your price range a bit you can step up to a laptop.

How strict is your budget?

Thanks guys, another thing i want to know,is netbook good enough for engineering? or i have to finally resort to a laptop?

latop for engineer

Hi there,

As an engineering student, I would suggest you look into some budget laptops. If you will be needing to run multiple programs at once, a faster, more powerful processor will serve you better. Also, you will probably be spending extensive time on your computer. A larger screen will be easier to look at for longer periods of time.

Well I am not a engineering student but still I am saying you that according to me if you have only to store the data or want to make only presentation that you can purchase the netbook. But if you are working any programming language and any project than you should go through laptop.
