Laptop - No Sound When I Play DVDs

I need advice. I have a Compaq laptop that's about 6 months old. I tried to play a DVD on it today and there was no sound. I clicked on the Device Manager, expanded the sound, video and game controllers section, and it says Conexant High Definition Audio. Does this mean I have a sound card inbult into my laptop? If so, why can't I hear DVDs when I play them? Any advice appreciated.

did you mess with the audio settings earlier? I did on my laptop and it took me forever to figure it out. Do external speakers work? Also, if u have vista, click once on the volume icon. You should see a bar of sound levels. Just click once on it. Play music, and check the bar. Does the bar move up and down?

No I haven't messed with the audio settings. It is only when I play DVDs; I played a video I downloaded from my camera just now and the sound was fine.
