Laptop not starting up.

I have problem with my Dell laptop. I have connected external hard disk through USB and suddenly laptop powered off and don't turn on till now.
when I connect the charger to it, the battery light showed red and laptop get heating up badly.
 
Based on the information you gave above, my first guess would be that the battery is somehow shorting out the charging circuitry, causing it to overheat. Does it still heat up quickly when the battery is removed? Try booting it up without the battery and try to connect the USB drive and let me know what happens.
