laptop not starting

my dads advent 6001 laptop seems to be having trouble starting up.

you switch it on, the advent screen comes on, then it says 'window did not start successfully' and you've got 30 secs to choose
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known good config
start windows normally

i have tried all of them numerous times, but after this page, the windows screen comes on like it normally would, then after a few seconds, it restarts and the whole cycle starts again

any ideas?

if we need a new laptop, can the HD in this one be connected to the new one so we don't loose any files?

thanks

most likely the solution is to recover the OS. but first lets check for a ram problem as ram can easily lodge out on laptops. i'd access the ram, re-seat it (taking it out and putting it back in), and if it doesn't work boot the lappy with 1 ram stick at a time. if ram isn't the issue then.....

check if the laptop has a built in recovery console via manual or internet. if it does then all you have to do is press a certain key or key combination during boot up to recover or re-install the os. if you know that there's a hidden partition then it must have it.

the alternative method is to use the recovery cd and choose "recover." if done properly you won't lose anything

if you do decide to get a new lappy then yes i can be replaced. however, if you only want the files i'd suggest doing something low cost like getting an external 2.5in enclosure or just slaving it onto the pc.

checked the RAM

checked the internet for recovery console, found this:

Your Advent computer uses the latest recovery system that doesn't require any CDs or DVDs to restore your PC to it's original factory condition.
Restart your computer.
Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting System Recovery" is displayed.
The recovery will load and display a menu of options:

Non-destructive recovery

To access the recovery options below that erase all data from the computer, click the Advanced button.

System Recovery - No format
System Recovery - Quick format:

Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
You will be informed about System Restore in Windows®, click Yes.
The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.

tried the pressing of F10 repeatedly, but the only thing that comes up is the Boot Menu with:
2. IDE 0:
3. IDE 1
7. PCI LAN:
<Enter setup>

so no luck there
can't use the CD, don't know where it is

Looks like you're going to have to buy it again i guess. I would wait for a little bit and get windows 7 on it when it comes out. i really like 7.

i think there is some hardware conflict ... se if u can recover with the recovery disk,,,,, try booting in safe mode and uninstall the driver ... .. and the ultimate option reformate it...

access the bios by pressing delete or maybe f1. look to see if it recognizes the hard drive. look at the boot order to see if there are any quotation marks

have heard 2 things today

1. maybe the motherboard is buggered
or
2. the most likely thing is to be the battery that is the problem

is the battery thing likely?
