I have a Gateway PEW91. When I try to turn it on, onlly the turn on buton lights up, but the fan and the hard disck don't appear to be working plus the screen never comes to life, it just stays black. There is been a couple of times that it actualy came on but is been 4 days so far since the last time a got it to work. So far any other attempt to make it come on has failed. Any ideas ??

I had a similar experience recently with a notebook. Lights were lighting and the HD was spinning but no other activity. I think mine overheated while I was out shopping. It was sitting on a leather chair with a lack of air. I'm just guessing though. I pulled th HD out and all my info was there safe and sound. Im not saying thats what happened to yours, or mine for that matter,
I just wanted to share that I had similar weird symptoms! Good luck! Maybe someone will throw in some ideas. 
If you're asking me, I just pulled the hard drive out and placed it in a new case and hooked it up via USB to another computer. My computer recognized the drive and all the files were on the drive. I felt very lucky on that one! I've never done that with a HD with and OS on it so I'm not sure if its OK to just start reading and wrting on that drive, now that its out. I'm still curious to know what happened to my computer but as long as my data is safe I view it as a minor financial loss that kind of ended OK. I'm just sharing as I had similar symptoms but I have no idea what happened to your computer. Do you know yet what happened? Good Luck!!
I guess we will just keep trying to help each other until an expert chimes in... do you think yours everheated. The symptom I experienced was new to me after owning more than 2 dozen notebooks over the years. I'll spare the details but I went shopping and left my notebook not well vented and when I returned... just a black screen. The activity lights would work as I turned it on and off and I could hear the HD spinning but very simply the screen stayed dark and nothing happened. I invision the CPU melting into the motherboard. Great news though that my HD was fine after I pulled it out.
