Laptop or Netbook

I'm going off to college next year and I'm looking for either a laptop or a netbook. I am looking for something that runs Windows, since I have a decent amount of games on Steam that won't run on a Mac. It needs to be able to handle fairly advanced games like Civ 5 and Team Fortress 2. I also have a large amount of music well. If it is a netbook, I can get an external hard drive, but that's only if there's a netbook powerful enough to run those games. What would you guys suggest for me?
 
There's no netbook powerful enough to run those games well. What's your budget range? If you're looking for portable yet powerful laptop I'd suggest looking into ultraportables. There are some ASUS 13" laptops are there that pack quite a punch in the graphics department for a modest $700-$900 price.
 
Ideally I'd like to keep it around $500, however, if there's a vast increase in quality with an extra couple hundred dollars, I would consider it.
