Laptop Problems. Overheating?

My laptop has been having a lot of problems lately. The keyboard is damaged. The numbers dont work except for the 5 and 6 keys. This isnt too much ofa problem however. I can always hook up a small keyboard to it and use that if I really need to use the numbers.
However, the computer also has trouble... well... staying on. Often it shts itself down randomly. I'm thinking it might be overheating problems, but the computer never did this when it was new. It was able to run games such as the Sims Two but now can't even get through the load secions of the game without failing and turning itself off.
Anyone have any probably exlanations and/or solutions?
 
If that is a Sony or Dell you probably have a bad Lithium battery in it. The lack of a working keyboard shows internal damage and continued use will probably finish it off unless you get it serviced. An overheating battery can cook the unit.
 
That's what I was thinking about, that it was a problem with the battery.
But no, its not a dell or a sony (lol. exploding dells). It is a compaq presario. Still, try to get it serviced and maybe get the battery replaced?

P.s. It's a motorola battery.
 
Just Because it's not a Sony battery doesn't mean anything there if it is the same type. Any make battery can see problems. The fact that the built in keyboard isn't working is a good sign of a factory defect in the unit itself. How long ago did you buy it? If it is still under a warranty you won't want to waste time getting back to the dealer or service center. Something shorting in the unit could cause a battery to heat up too. Have someone go through it.
 
Before HP bought up Compaq you know where they stood(blah...). Portables seeing heavy usage will often see problems come up faster due to their design. The Vaio's were getting excellent reviews before the batteries were recalled. So you know it's the laptops themselves. But they are still rather fragile while being convenient to carry along with you.

More then that if the thermal compound has become dried out and brittle. The cpu hsf would have to be reseated with Artic Silver or replaced if the fan simply quit seeing a cpu overheat. Depending on how and where you use a laptop they usually are not quite the dust magnet a desktop is.
