My daughter has an HP 15-1039wm with an Intel Celeron N2830 processer. I want to change the hard drive but not sure what to get. Can I buy a better processor or just get buy the same one to replace. I am into hot rods so modifying something for better performance is right up my alley. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can replace the original hard drive with an SSD but really can't change the processor. The celeron is a low end cpu.

Throw an SSD like a Samsung 850 Evo 250GB in there and she will notice a big speed difference, even though her CPU is quite low-end. It won't make processing any faster because that's done by the CPU, but it will make reading and writing files much faster (usually about 4-5x faster than a hard drive on SATA 6GBps) and that will make Windows much more responsive and boot and shut down much quicker.

An SSD is one of, if not the single best upgrade you can do if you ask me. The laptop manual should explain how to replace the hard drive.

Thanks for the replies. Spirit you mentioned a 250 GB what about a 500?
They're all synonymous, if you need more capacity you can just get a larger one, although the drive is starting to become more expensive than the whole laptop ;)

Another question, the laptop currently has windows 7. Can I ugrade to 10 or do I need to go back with 7?

Upgrade to Windows 10 using their media creation tool on Microsofts website BEFORE you install a new drive.

Then you have it licenced to your hardware.

For the most part, there are no issues upgrading to 10 from Windows 7. If it already has windows 7 then upgrade to 10. If it doesn't have an OS installed currently, then you can install windows 10 using the windows 7 activation key on the bottom of the laptop.

Yup any size that works for you will be fine. :)

I just tend to recommend 250GB as a 'sweet spot' for best value and a decent amount of space.

Do you have experience disassembling laptops? You have a modern "that OEM hates you" style laptop with no storage door meaning you need to completely disassemble it to get at the internals. You will need a couple of small phillips head screwdrivers (magnetized!) and possibly Torx as well. Also you will need a pry tool such as an iSESAMO to pry the system apart after you remove all screws (many may be hidden. Watch a youtube disassembly). Be very careful with the internals of the machine. Make sure you discharge any static in your body and be careful of delicate wires and ribbon cables inside the machine. The insides of laptops are very delicate.

In 99% of cases laptop CPUs are not upgradable. Some high end laptop CPUs are socketed but most are BGA (ball grid array) and they are actually permanently affixed to the motherboard.
