Laptop RAM issues...

I'm running a Gateway ML3109 (Laptop). I just bought a 1gb stick of ram for an upgrade. The laptop came with 512mb however when I put the 1gb stick in the extra slot & it only shows that I have 1gb. To test the problem I took a 2gb stick from another laptop and tested all the combination's.
2gb+512mb=2gb
1gb+51mb=1gb
2gb+1gb=3gb
512mb alone = 512mb
2gb alone = 2gb
1gb alone = 1gb

So the 512mb seems to be working by itself but when I add either a 1 or 2gb stick it doesn't show up. Then interesting thing I thought was when I plug in the 2gb+1gb and come up with 3gb... can anyone explain why this is happening and what I can do so that the computer will recognize 1.5gb of ram which is what I was wanting. Thanks!

According to crucial.com, your laptop only supports up to 2gb of ddr2 533mhz memory. You have 2 slots with a maximum of 1gb per slot.

The computer recognizes 2gb when I have only the 2gb stick plugged in with the second slot empty... are you saying that it is only utilizing 1gb even though it recognizes 2gb???

Doesn't answer your question but interesting quote off a site.

The interesting thing is that according to ATI, the chipset in the ML3109 should support 4gb ram, but Gateway officially pegs the specs on the ML3109 as 2gb ram max.

Apparently, not only does the ML3109 support FSB greater than 533mhz, it also supports 4gb ram, with the limiting factor being the OS, and not the chipset.

Hi,
Did you ever figure out what was causing your memory problem? I have a customer with the same laptop and he has the same issue.
Originally he had 2 X 512 detected as 1GB
he purchased 1GB and added it with the 512 - detected as 1gb only
then he purchased another 1GB, so with 2 X 1GB - only detects as 1GB
but when using each !GB chip individually - it detects 1GB, so I know the chips are good.
So, I was wondering if you came up with a solution. I checked and there aren't any bios updates.
Thanks!
