Okay, someone told me their laptop is running at 160 F idle and want me to take a look at it.... With a pc id know to check the fans for dust, and the heat sink but with a laptop... im sure is just faulty hardware correct?

what kinda cpu does it have in it? it may just be like a bad heat pipe... ive had to replace 3 heat pipes in our company's HP business laptops in the last month.

I havent seen the laptop yet, but I just sent an email out to get the model number that b so I will be able to get back to you in a bit. HeatPipe huh, okay i just googled it to figure out what it is.... Is there a way I could know for sure

Which temp is at 160F? I know with my laptop(a freaking leg warmer) that the motherboard will constantly run at 10-15C higher than the cpu and gpu. Currently on my HP dv6000 with Firefox and PDF viewer running, I'm at GPU 131F mobo: 149F Core1: 113F core2: 115F.

I know these seem high, especially when compared to desktops, but usually, a laptop is built with higher heat tolerances. From what I remember, the critical shutdown temp on the T5550 1.83ghz C2D is like 85C. Post up what processor he's running and we'll see if its still a safe amount of heat or not.

Who knows, maybe a fan crapped out on it.

I believe this is the internal temp of the laptop, Again i did not receive it yet to fix it, i was just shocked when I heard it was that high idle... yeah my laptop right here im on is running at 42 C internal (106 Degrees)

she said shes sitting it on a desk, which i still think is BS, im sure its sitting on some type of blanket on her bed

well, if its a fast laptop... my alienwares idle at 61c and under full load hit about 75c.... just depends what the TJ is for the proc... but if its the like the NB or SB you definitely have a problem... you may just have to take off the heatpipe/headsinks and throw some new artic silver and give it a good cleaning

thanks for the help man, what program do you use to measure the temps?
I dont have a northbridge showing on my program
